Nigel's Blog (1) - Volunteering at the Tanfield Railway Museum
First Day – Sunday 28 January 2018
I arrived at East Tanfield Station at 10.00 am. My first jobs were to sweep the floor in the station building, check that the toilets have toilet paper, hand soap and paper towels. Black waste bags were then put outside on the platform for collection when the first train arrived. Then it was putting displays of cases, parcels and trollies out on the platform. Next was setting up tables with napkins, knives, spoons, cups and saucers.
Then I waited for the first training arriving at 11.04 am. The train was full and it seemed most people from the train were in the queue at the café counter. Customers were sitting at tables, had their drinks and food taken to them, a task Nigel helped with. 20 minutes later it was time for the train to leave for Andrew’s station and the café emptied as quickly as it filled. Now it was time to clear tables, sweep the floor, wash the dishes and set the tables ready for the next training coming in. This was repeated until the last train left at 3.35 pm, this time after cleaning the café we went round the outside of the station putting up the shutters.
BIG BIG THANK YOU TO ALL STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS AT TANFIELD RAILWAY MUSEUM http://www.tanfield-railway.co.uk/
